You’re having a baby! Yay, congratulations! After the initial excitement settles in, you begin to realize all of the things you’re going to need once your newborn arrives. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first. But, once you break it down and strip away all of the stuff you really don’t need, you’ll find a practical list of items that are completely manageable.
Many expectant moms register for these items so that they’ll have a better chance of getting the exact item they need when the baby shower rolls around. Even if you’re not having a shower, a baby registry gives friends and family a good idea of the things you’re looking for when your baby arrives. No matter what store or online site you decide to register at, remember you don’t need everything in the baby aisle. With that said there are five baby gifts you should register for:
1) Diapers & wipes
It sounds like a no brainer, but many times expectant moms can get so wrapped up in the other baby “essentials” that they forget number one…diapers and wipes. You’re going to need diapers from day one and for at least the next two years or so. That’s why it’s important to register for different size diapers. While everyone may get you newborn size diapers, your baby will be out of those in no time. Stocking up is never a bad idea!
2) Infant car seat
You’re not going to leave the hospital without an infant car seat that’s properly installed. It’s best to get this item well before your due date so that you can make sure it’s completely safe for baby. Infant car seats are used for babies from four to sometimes even 30 pounds. It’s a good idea to do your homework and check reviews as well as recent recalls to make sure you are choosing the best car seat for your baby.
3) Stroller
Planning on taking a walk to the park or maybe a trip to the mall? You’re going to need a stroller, especially if your little one likes to nap. All strollers are not created equal. From umbrella strollers to jogger strollers, each one serves its own purpose. Just to make things even more exciting, there are travel systems that work with the infant car seats allowing you to lock the car seat in place in the stroller. When you’re shopping for a stroller, read up on all the features so you choose the one that best suits your needs.
4) Baby bath tub
A baby bath tub is an essential. Sure you can try to wash him in the regular tub or even the sink, but that can get slippery and pose a hazard. A baby bath tub allows baby to relax while you give him a “tubbie”. When deciding which tub to put on the registry, get a plastic tub that’s easy to clean and repels mildew. Also, many tubs have a small removable hammock insert. This comes in handy as baby grows and is able to sit up. Keep the hammock in for the newborn stage and remove it as baby gets bigger.
5) Baby monitor
Baby monitors have evolved so much thanks to technology. You can still get the older analog monitors or you can go the digital route. It also depends whether you want to be able to just hear baby or hear and see baby move. The options don’t end there. Some monitors also have a feature that allows you to see baby on your smart phone. Like with other items of baby gear, it’s important to read up on a variety of products and then decide which one is best for you.
Once you register for these five must-haves, you’ll be off to a good start for when baby arrives!
